Coding Fellowship Student: Jordan

"The Fellowship has been a real rollercoaster of a ride so far, but it's taught me more than I knew I was capable of learning and introduced me to some incredible people." We caught up with bootcamp student, Jordan, to find out how he is getting on.

Jordan made the leap to the bootcamp after seeing the opportunity to combine his previous copy writing skills and a career in tech. He is looking towards a future where he can work on projects he is really passionate about.

Jordan Coding Fellowship Student

What was your background/career before you joined the Coding Fellowship bootcamp?

I did a BA Hons in Illustration and then worked 5 years as a copywriter.

When you were first considering bootcamps, what was your vision to where they could propel you in your career say…. 5 years on?

I was imagining that over time it could open some doors for me to be a part of a programming community, perhaps leading a small, independent team, and even combining some of my previous skills to produce some real passion projects.

What made you want to look outside of a career in copywriting?

I wanted to move away from an industry where I felt isolated into one where I can interact with like-minded peers and share knowledge with an enthusiastic community.

What were your main concerns before enrolling on the bootcamp?

I was concerned as to whether I was cut out for the intensity of the course after such a long absence in an educational environment, especially with such little background knowledge in coding (and computers in general).

How have those fears been dispelled since being on the bootcamp?

It’s a work-in-progress, at times I still don’t feel cut out for it. It’s often hard to set aside ego and admit that you’re struggling to understand or keep up with such a dense amount of learning in such a short space of time. But, if I look back to what little I knew before starting compared to what I do now, I can see that I’ve learnt a lot.

Did you previous career require any coding experience?

I’d utilised very simple, surface-level HTML during my time as a copywriter, but nothing too in-depth.

How would you describe your experience so far on the bootcamp?

It’s probably been one of the most challenging things I’ve done. The Fellowship has been a real rollercoaster of a ride so far, but it’s taught me more than I knew I was capable of learning and introduced me to some incredible people.

What have you enjoyed the most?

Those ‘eureka’ moments where something clicks, you get some code to work, and you understand why it works in the first place.

How would you describe the style of support offered on the course?

Support is always there when you need it, but there’s no hand-holding really involved. Tutors are happy to point you in the right direction and let you figure things out for yourself which is much more rewarding in the long run. It’s always good to remember that they were in your position once, so they understand how to get the best out of you.

What would you say to someone thinking of attending our Coding Bootcamp in Bristol?

Make no mistake – this is tough. It’s called a “Bootcamp” for a reason. There’ll be moments when you doubt yourself and your abilities, but just remember that this isn’t a competition – communicate with the other people on your Fellowship, and you’ll soon realise you’re not alone, and that self-doubt is a normal part of the process. If you want something bad enough, you’ll do what it takes to get it.

We have been running Bristol Coding Bootcamps for 5 years and welcome anyone with a learning attitude and a genuine desire to put 100% into their career change. Find out more about our Bootcamp here and get in touch with any queries!
