Our B Corp journey

As we transition into the winter months ahead and take a little time to both invest and reflect - we are keen to share some of our intentions and ambitions for 2021.

The last nine months have clearly been a challenging time. The COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdowns and related global recession have created a highly uncertain outlook; accelerating digitisation and the arrival of the future of work.

During this time we have been asking ourselves some serious questions as a business.

  • How can we develop our business as a ‘force for good’ in the world?
  • What is most important to our team, students and hiring partners in that journey?
  • How can we promote ethical software development?
  • What role does technology play in the climate crisis?

Fundamental in finding our answers to these questions is our continued commitment in becoming a certified B Corp in 2021.

We are well on our way in our B Corp journey and have been working hard behind the scenes. Thankfully one of our co-founders Al Kennedy is a certified B Leader and is guiding us along the way.

So, what exactly is a B Corp?

Certified B Corps are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.

B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. The B Corp community works toward reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities, and the creation of more high quality jobs with dignity and purpose. B Corps use profits and growth as a means to a greater end: positive impact for their employees, communities, and the environment.

The B Impact Assessment which forms the structure and framework to certification – is a very rigorous process that helps you to assess every aspect of your operations. The BIA covers the following key sections:

  • Governance – our business mission, values and structure
  • Workers – how we support the well-being of our team
  • Customers – the value we create for our clients
  • Environment – our selection and use of resources and energy
  • Community – how we contribute to our connected communities

Our journey continues

We have plenty of work to do, but we are absolutely committed to this ambition and belief in the equal importance of people, planet, and profit. Becoming a B Corp is really only the beginning of our journey, as the process demands reassessment (and hopefully improvement!) every three years.  As we remind ourselves, we can either be ‘part of the solution or part of the problem’, and we know as a company which side of that story we want to be on.

We can always do better. We also look forward to joining those companies who are already certified as B Corps in the UK, and especially the ever growing B local community in the South West.
