Remote Coding Bootcamp Student – Tumeka
"The community has been one of the best communities I have been a part of. There is a real authenticity to the developers who teach and run the course who genuinely want all of their students to succeed."
Before becoming a remote Coding Bootcamp student Tumeka worked in retail, hospitality and administration.
What experience of coding did you have before the bootcamp?
I had experience with Tumblr and Codecademy. I have always been creative but also like logic because it is very rewarding to see things function and work.
What are you looking to achieve from completing the bootcamp?
It would be brilliant to gain a role in the gaming industry as this would marry together my job with my hobby which would be so satisfying.
I am also interested in weaving in the consideration of UX and UI into my Software Development.
What was your main question before starting the bootcamp?
With the course being an intensive 16 week course, my main concern was “How will I be able to retain all the information?”
How has your experience set your mind at rest?
Within a few weeks of the course starting, it became evident that the key thing was not about retaining all the information, but having the tools and knowledge to be able to research and find the information that you needed.
Tell us about your experience as a remote Coding Bootcamp student so far?
The Fellowship so far has been challenging but rewarding. Thinking back to the first week of the course where I had a small amount of knowledge, to week 7 where I now know two programming languages, and how to build and design a website. The community has been one of the best communities I have been a part of. There is a real authenticity to the developers who teach and run the course who genuinely want all of their students to succeed.
How have you found learning remotely?
Being a remote coding bootcamp student is a real learning curve and one that is extremely important in the current climate. It’s a really good skill to have being able to work remotely as it will come in handy when needing to be confident with remote interviews.
To be fair, I was unsure as to how well I would be able to learn, and pick up the skills I needed being remote, but surprisingly I have found myself to be more productive.
How would you describe the support?
The support on the Fellowship has been great. There is no limit to the amount of help you can ask for which is superb for a novice developer like me. It’s a privilege to be able to soak up as much information as you can and to pick the lecturer’s brain about anything tech related.
A little about you – tell us how you feel about your achievements so far!
What I am most proud of during the Fellowship is my overall attitude. It has been challenging but I have overcome a lot of struggles and seeing myself improve every week has been really rewarding.
We have been helping students move to Tech for over 6 years now! In April 2021 we are launching a part time version of our course too – you can read more about that here and more about the full time course here. Questions? you will get a quick response by emailing us as [email protected]
