Change career to a job you love – Tom, Bootcamp student

With prior experience for working within a development team it was straight forward for Tom to make the decision to change his career to software development.

What was your background before joining the bootcamp?

I previously worked as a financial analyst at a bank, where I was given the opportunity to retrain as a developer, however after only a month of training they made the UK team redundant.

I’d found working in a development team a great experience and so joined a start-up, BaseKit, as a Tester in order to gain exposure to some different languages and technologies. I then moved to Scott Logic as a Test Engineer, working as a consultant on various client projects.

While testing is challenging, I wanted something more creative and so was up for a career change!

Tell us about your hobbies and interests.

I’m a keen climber (I try to get out to South Wales or Cheddar Gorge whenever possible) and I also really enjoy cycle touring.

tom coding bootcamp studentWhat coding experience did you have before the bootcamp?

I’m used to working on a development team, so I had experience of source control tools such as Git and SVN. I’ve also built some test automation frameworks (both UI and API) in a few different languages (C#, JavaScript and Python) and used MySQL to ensure accuracy of data.

What are you looking to achieve from the bootcamp?

I’m excited about being able to build full applications.

Did you have any worries or anxieties before enrolling?

I was a little concerned about the course being delivered remotely.

How do you feel about that now?

It’s been great!

The instructors and teaching assistants make the content really engaging and I’ve no idea how people managed to do the course in the classroom without two screens (it’s a life-saver being able to compare examples and notes with code I’ve written myself).

The instructors and my fellow students have created a really supportive atmosphere. It’s not quite the same as meeting people in-person but I’ve been happy with it.

What are our thoughts on the structure of the bootcamp?

Really enjoyable. Having a lecture followed by relevant problems really works – it makes understanding some initially abstract-seeming concepts much easier.

How would you describe the support?

Great and varied! The weekly one-to-ones are very helpful with lots of invaluable advice from my mentor too. If I have a question during the day at any point I always receive a quick and detailed answer.

What achievements are you proud of?

Me and a friend jointly renovated a house, which involved a lot of DIY youtube channels, some extremely dodgy plastering and a lot of gaffa tape!

We have been helping students change careers into Tech for over 5 years. In April 2021 we are launching a part time version of our bootcamp which you can read more about here and more about the full time course here. Questions? you will get a quick response by emailing us as [email protected]
