Student Profile: Kate
I have really enjoyed every aspect of the course and have found it to be just the kind of balance of creative problem solving and logic that I was hoping for.
Did you have any concerns before joining the Fellowship?
My main concern was to do with making such a big career change from my teaching and music therapy work, and whether it would be the right thing for me, having very little experience of the world of coding at that point. I was also very aware that I was having to trust the course leaders to train us in technologies that are current and up-to-date in order to be ready for the job market.
How has your experience on the Fellowship answered those concerns?
I have found that the course has allayed my fears in terms of my suitability for the work as I have really enjoyed every aspect of the course and have found it to be just the kind of balance of creative problem solving and logic that I was hoping for. In terms of the content of the course, I have felt really reassured by the progression of the content and the mixture of fundamentals as well as the learning of frameworks.
Describe your Coding Fellowship experience so far?
I have been really enjoying the course. The teaching has been excellent and the balance of lectures to challenges and exercises has been just right to get to grips with the content. I have really enjoyed the progression of the content and it is gratifying to see how much I have learnt each time we come back to a subject to build on it further. The teachers and TAs have all been very helpful, knowledgable and approachable.
How are you finding remote learning?
I have found remote learning to work very well for me as being able to work uninterrupted at home has meant I can get a lot done, perhaps more than I would have. It’s good to have access to all the creature comforts of being at home too! That said, I am really looking forward to meeting the group and staff in person at some point!
How would you describe the support on the Fellowship?
The support has been really great throughout the course. There is a definite sense that all the staff are really keen to help and make sure that we all have as good an experience as we can and get out of the course the maximum knowledge and understanding. The pastoral support has also been great, with regular check-ins on how we are feeling and managing.
Have you had thoughts about what area you may like to work in when you graduate?
Following on from my previous careers as an educationalist and health professional, I would ideally love to work within an industry that makes a positive difference to people, or the world, in some way.
Have you had thoughts about what which kind of organisation you might like to work with?
I don’t have a specific kind of organisation in mind though I would very much like to work as part of a team of developers, so that I can continue to learn from those around me.
What achievements are you most proud of?
I am very proud of my work achievements to date, but I am also proud that I had the courage to make this change to programming as I feel relieved to have found something that is a much more natural fit to the way my brain works. I am proud that I have been able to keep up with the course and learn so much, and I am excited that I am now on a very long (never ending!) learning journey into the world of development.
